In 2019 we began working with Sport in Mind and Becoming Mums to provide in depth movement classes for post natal women* experiencing mental ill health. Through NHS referrals, word of mouth, and the networks and outreach of our partners, we worked with a large number of women across 3 separate 6 week courses.
Mafê Toledo, a highly experience dance practitioner, designed a 6 week course that explored different areas of the body most affected by pregnancy and birth, and combined body awareness, gentle movement and creative expression to support participants to reconnect with their bodies and theirselves, in a space where their babies were welcome and catered for.
The impact was significant, with all participants reporting a positive improvement in their overall sense of wellbeing. Many spoke about regaining confidence, discovering a creative side, and challenging their preconceived ideas about dance.
Classes continue via Sport in Mind, and we will be designing a new programme soon. Watch this space!
